New York Times Book Reviewer: A Vote for McCain is a Vote for Apocalypse

Author Robert Stone, hired by The New York Times to review the book Forever War by NY Times war correspondent Dexter Filkins, offers his calm assessment of the consequences of a McCain victory in November's election:

As for the 2008 presidential election, Stone had this to say: “If, in this campaign, illusion triumphs over what we must believe is reality, we will fail as a nation. There is, after all, a point of no return. If McCain wins, history is here big time, scythe, sackcloth and all four horsemen.”

Which candidate restores America's standing in the world?

I feel this is the most important question, as it connects with many of the issues of our time... of course each person will have a different opinion on it.

What elites in the rest of the world think of this country is not at the top of my list of concerns. The point of this post though was the ridiculously over-the-top rhetoric on the part of Stone. I'd rather not see Obama win the election, but I'm not going to tell you that we'll face an apocalypse if he does.

Stone's quote is a bit over the top, but its election season and there's plenty of that on both sides. Its rallying the base, scaring the undecided, etc... expect it to continue and intensify.

McCain, I could live with. I just hope he lives if he is elected. Because... Palin - she scares the crap out of me!

what the heck are they thinking? Can't they find a smart person who got their passport more than a year ago and finished (a good) college in a normal amount of time? Beauty queen? Alaska? Hello....?

Smell the coffee!

Fewer than 50% of students in my college graduated in four years, and most of the folks I know who took 5 or more years to graduate are doing fine.

As for McCain living if elected, his mother is 96 and going strong. He also is, according to an NY Times reporter/physician who went through his medical records, in good health for someone his age (notwithstanding his disabilities from Vietnam).

So you went of your way to find and post an inflammatory quote out of a book review in an effort to show how tolerant of dissenting ideas you are?

There is no dishonor in taking 5 years or more to finish a degree, and I have no doubt most who do so are doing fine. A more-relevant question is how they compare with people who finish on time. I'm guessing not a lot of Wall Street elites looking for Fed handouts these days got to where they are on the 5-year plan.
